Patient information - Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation

The program in Pediatric Stem cell transplantation is part of the Pediatric Oncology and Hematology section (headed by Prof. Paul G. Schlegel) of the University Children’s Hospital Würzburg.
Our center is treating patients requiring an autologous or allogeneic stem cell transplantation from the age of 0 – 21 years.
The program is focused on both, allogeneic as well as autologous transplantation.

Patients suffering from

  •  high risk hematologic malignancies (such as acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoid leukemia with high risk factors).
  • refractory leukemia
  • myelodysplastic syndromes
  • recurrent lymphoma
  • immunodeficiency (such as SCID)
  • inborn errors of metabolism

may benefit from allogenic transplantation of blood and marrow stem cells from a healthy donor (unrelated donor, sibling donor or parent).

As part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center, we are one of the centers in Germany where children with relapsed or refractory ALL may be treated with the novel antibody construct Blinatumomab (MT103).

Patients suffering from

  • certain types of brain tumors
  • Ewing sarcoma
  • recurrent lymphoma
  • high risk neuroblastoma
  • atypical rhabdoid/theratoid tumors (AT/RT)

may benefit from autologous stem cell transplantation using the patient´s own stem cells to rescue bone marrow function after high dose chemotherapy.

Depending on the underlying disease and the availability of a donor, we either propose transplantation with a matched donor, but may also offer haploidentical transplantation, using the latest technology of purified stem cells from one of the parents.

Our transplant unit consist of 7 beds, each in a single room, providing an especially protected environment (HEPA-filtration in all rooms of the whole unit) to minimize the risk of atypical infections in our immune-compromised patients.
State-of-the-art ventilation allows enough room for the individual patients to endure the time during leukocyte aplasia, where the risk of infection may be high.

Impression of our unit

A dedicated team of specialized nurses, social workers, physiotherapists and physicians is providing round-the-clock care for our patients. All necessary routine medical interventions such as bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures (in general anaesthesia) may be performed in the patient’s room. The in-house GMP stem cell laboratory is fully licensed by state and national regulatory authorities to prepare stem cell transplants (selection, processing, freezing and storage) and to provide tailored cellular products for each individual patient.
